The Statistical Services Centre (SSC) is a self-financing unit, sitting within the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. It provides consultancy and training in statistics and data management to a broad client base in the UK, Europe and in developing countries. Their clients include industry, government, international organisations and the academic world.
Formed in 1983, the SSC has a long history of providing statistical support. Currently, its main income streams are UK and European consultancy and short course training, research support in developing countries, and a workload exchange with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. This work is carried out by a team of eight statisticians and two IT consultants assisted by a small administration team.
The Centre aims to make statistics accessible and effective as a tool to solve practical problems. The team strive to find cost-effective solutions for the needs of clients based on their expertise and statistical knowledge.
The Vice-Chancellor, Sir David Bell visited the Centre recently and during his tour he received a number of presentations from staff on the SSC's work and the added value this brings to the University, particularly with respect to its internationalisation agenda, and collaborations with the Walker Institute and the School of Agriculture, Policy and Development.
Following the visit, Sir David said; "As well as being a success in its own right, the Centre is doing much to enhance the global reputation of the University of Reading."
James Gallagher, the SSC's Director, said; "I am delighted the Vice-Chancellor was able to visit. We are very proud that, as a unit, we have been in existence for almost 30 years. This demonstrates the value of the SSC's work and its international reputation."
