Dr Jacopo Torriti appointed to Defra advisory panel

Dr Jacopo Torriti

The University is delighted to congratulate Dr Jacopo Torriti on his appointment to the newly formed Economic Advisory Panel to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

The panel will provide advice, support and new research insights to Defra's economists and policymakers.

Dr Torriti is a lecturer in Energy Economics and Policy in Construction Management and Engineering with an interest in the costs, benefits and risks of energy and environmental policies. His current research focuses on policies, technologies and economic incentives affecting energy demand for UK and EU smart grids.

Dr Torriti said: "I believe that one of the key issues for the panel will be to advise Defra on best ways to achieve sustainability in the UK in a variety of policy areas including energy demand and the built environment."

He will join Dr Elizabeth Robinson, a Reader in Environmental Economics from the School of Agriculture Policy and Development, who is also part of the Defra Economic Advisory Panel.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is a government department in the UK. They make policy and legislation, and work with others to deliver strategies in areas such as: the natural environment, biodiversity, plants and animals; sustainable development and the green economy; food, farming and fisheries; animal health and welfare; environmental protection and pollution control; and rural communities and issues.

Although they only work directly in England, they work closely with the devolved administrations in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and also generally lead on negotiations in the EU and internationally.
