New guide to help staff manage student placements
Monday, 03 December 2012
The Careers, Placement and Experience Centre have recently launched a new online guide for members of staff who are responsible for running students placements at the University.
Students from all disciplines now have the opportunity to take a placement as part of their course, so the website has been created in response to the growing demand for guidance from those staff involved in their management.
Some schools and departments within the University already have a strong culture of placement provision with dedicated placement staff in place, and the guide draws on their professional knowledge and experience to develop a strong Community of Practice for Placement Learning.
Placements are a valuable addition to a degree for any student, and include the Mini, Micro and Maxi placement opportunities which have been made available to students through their course, as well as those schemes organised as an extracurricular activity, such as the Summer Employment Experience and Discovery (SEED) scheme.
Emma Sowden, Senior Placement and Development Manager, said: "We've developed the online guide for all staff responsible for placements across the University, firstly to ensure staff are following the University guidelines on managing student placement processes, but also to support staff who are new to running placement opportunities for students, inside and outside of the curriculum.
"As the scale of placements at the University is so much bigger than in previous years, we have experienced a lot more placement queries from staff than we'd normally receive. Many of these issues have been addressed with within the appropriate sections of the guide. We hope staff find it easy to navigate and it will be updated regularly to ensure all information is current, correct and in line with the national guidance on the management of placements."
