Collation of responses to the University Strategy Consultation
Wednesday, 23 January 2013
Staff responses to the Strategy consultation have been collated and summarised against the priority areas identified and can now be found on the University Strategy consultation page.
Vice-Chancellor Sir David Bell said:
I would like to thank colleagues who took part in the consultation exercise for their participation, considered comments, candour and enthusiasm for our University and its future.
In general, the experience has been a very positive one for the University, with a number of comments expressing a hope that this is the start of an-going process of greater staff engagement. It is an approach that I am committed to. All your comments, in an anonymised format, have been fed back to the senior manager leading each strand of the consultation and provide valuable insights and excellent food for thought.
There were a number of clear themes arising from the consultation, which are summarised in the feedback document. In particular, however, I would like to highlight the consensus on the importance of retaining and building on our research focus and ensuring we provide a supportive infrastructure to facilitate this, along with the shared belief that our success is dependent on the effective work of all parts of our University community.
All these comments will carry into the next phase of the development of our Strategy. As I mentioned in my last talks to staff, we are working in a fast -moving and increasingly competitive Higher Education sector. Making sure we have a clear direction for our short to medium-term ambitions is an excellent foundation but I want us to establish a real sense of where this institution will be and what it will stand for further into the future. For that reason, I believe there is still work to be done on establishing our University Strategy. The process is more complicated than perhaps we had imagined at the outset, but we will take our time and ensure this University is confident of its next steps. I hope to have more information later in the academic year as we work with external consultants to build on the work done to date. In the meantime, thank you all for your contributions thus far and I trust you will recognise the spirit of your comments in the feedback document.
