Changes to staff car parking charges
Friday, 28 June 2013
Following four years of unchanged car parking charges on campus, a Working Group set up by Senior Management Board has been charged with establishing an appropriate and fair level of parking fee for each of the three campuses. Membership of the Group included representatives from all three campuses, as well as academic and non-academic representatives from across the University.
The new charges will take effect from 1 January 2014.
Chair of the Working Group, David Savage, Chief Operating Officer, said: "Increasing parking charges is never likely to be popular, but after four years with no change and the financial imperatives facing the University, the Working Group was clear in its view that the current levels were unsustainable.
"We have worked hard to ensure the new system is simple, easy to understand and, above all, fair. While most, although not all, staff will see the annual cost of parking increase, the changes are relatively small and the average cost of parking at the University will still work out at less than 50p a day, which compares very favourably with other organisations."
The Working Group's recommendation, which has been approved by Senior Management Board, will create a new charging system based on salary bands.

For Greenlands staff (annual charge)
Greenlands staff will be charged at 50% of the Reading campuses rates due to the limited accessibility of the campus by alternative means of transport.
Part-time staff: the cost of a permit for part-time staff will be calculated at 50% of the appropriate rate.
Car sharing: to promote car sharing, two cars will be able to register under one permit.
Students: Charges remain unchanged.
Visitor parking: Non-staff members of Senior Common Room will be charged £48 p.a.
Hanging visitor permits will be increased to £1 per permit, charged to Schools/Departments. Further work is also being done on introducing pay and display arrangements on the Whiteknights campus within the next three years to allow for occasional access to parking on campus for staff and visitors. A salary sacrifice scheme for staff is also being introduced alongside the new charges.
RUSU/Nursery staff: Charges will remain unchanged.
The fees will be reviewed on an annual basis and further increases cannot be ruled out. The permits will be enforced with fixed penalty notices of £75 following one warning notice.
