Monday, 29 July 2013
The winner of the University's PhD researcher of the year has been awarded to Katherine Livingstone.
Based within the University's School of Agriculture Policy and Development (SAPD), Katherine's doctorate addressed whether or not dairy should be part of a healthy diet.
She has been able to reveal through her research that milk intake is a predictor of lower prospective blood pressure, while dairy intake is inversely associated with prospective arterial stiffness.
Professor Kelvin Balcombe, the Director of Postgraduate Research Studies of SAPD said; "Katherine was an excellent PhD student with great determination to achieve her objectives. During her time with us her findings have been published in the journals Nutrition Research Reviews and Hypertension, a world leading journal in its field, and she has had an additional paper accepted for publication in Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases.
"She has also presented her work at various conferences throughout Europe and was an organiser of a conference for Early Stage Researchers at the University of Barcelona. Her latest achievement is achieving the Rank Nutrition Prize for PhD students."
Vice-Chancellor, Sir David Bell reflected on the significance of all of this year's candidates achievements; "As a leading research-intensive university, the University of Reading offers outstanding opportunities to pursue doctoral study with world-leading academics across the broad range of disciplines. Reading has large concentrations of doctoral training, providing a particularly strong, supportive and distinctive environment for research students and is testament to why research matters beyond academia.
"The showcase this year has demonstrated how the high quality of our students' research has led to global collaborations, achieved published papers in leading journals and changed people's lives for the better."
