New Whiteknights heating system fires up

Tuesday, 23 September 2014

Whiteknights sign

The University's new heating system at Whiteknights will go live at the start of October in the following buildings: URS, Whiteknights House; HumSS; AMS; Miller; Knight; Library and Palmer.

This does mean that if we experience a very cold snap between now and the system going live, Estates and Facilities will not be able to turn on the heating until the start of October.

After going live, we will  continue with a period of fine tuning over a few months to ensure the entire system is balanced and operating as efficiently as possible.  Food Bioscience, Maths & ITS, Chemistry, Engineering, Systems Engineering and JJ Thompson will remain on the steam system for this year and will be transferred  onto the new system next year.

The University is installing a new hot water heating system to replace the ageing steam system.  The new system, comprising a new Energy Centre with gas fired boilers and a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant, will contribute almost 10% of the carbon savings needed to hit our 35% target and save over £250,000 in utilities costs annually.
