Tree maintenance work on Whiteknights Campus
Monday, 24 November 2014
On our Whiteknights campus we have many unusual, old and beautiful trees which make our campus very special. Unfortunately, a number of our significant trees are decayed or have structural weaknesses which mean that they could pose a safety risk to students, colleagues and visitors during storms.
In early December, our grounds team will be starting a programme of remedial works to some of our significant trees on the central part of the campus. Individual information boards will explain the work happening to staff, students and visitors. Diversions will be in place on the 8 December (between 8-4pm) on the Black Bridge over the lake and colleagues will be asked to use Friends' Bridge during this time.
The plan work includes:
Removing the Pagoda Tree outside the library (6 December)
The grounds team has been keeping a close eye on this tree for a number of years, following a number of falling branches. The base of the tree is now partially decayed and the decay fungus Pholiota squarrosa is also visible. As part of the library refurbishment, we will be reviewing the whole landscape, so currently there are no plans to replant here.
Reducing the height of the Oak tree outside the Students Union (6 December)
The crown of this tree will be reduced because of the basal decay along with the presence of the fungus Grifola frondosa.
Reducing the height of the Cedar of Lebanon outside the Cedar Hotel (13 December for five days)
A recent inspection revealed a potential weaknesses within the crown which has been exacerbated by previous falling branches through wind and snow damage. Should one of the major trunks fail, it would likely result in the loss of the tree. By carrying out a crown reduction work (removing the top of the tree), we will be extending the life and presence of this remarkable tree.
Reducing the height of the Horse Chestnut at Eat at the Square terrace
This tree has some structural weaknesses and will require some light to moderate pruning.
Removing the Alder by the Black Bridge across the lake (8 December)
The Alder is at risk of causing structural damage to the dam at the lake and we are under statutory obligation to keep the dam clear. This means that the Black Bridge will be closed on 8 December.
Further work will be carried out on the Holm Oaks in the central part of Whiteknights Campus in the spring.
