Have a safe and sustainable Christmas

carbon reduction

We are committed to a 35% carbon reduction by July 2016

Message from our sustainability team

Before you leave for Christmas, please take a few moments to consider what equipment you may be able to turn off.  From our recent Blackout event we know equipment is left on and last year during Christmas closure week, the university spent £52,000 on electricity! Here are a few things to do before you leave...

  • Turn off all electrical equipment that does not need to remain on including printers, hot water boilers and laboratory equipment
  • Identify who is going to turn off equipment that is shared, often this can be left on with everyone expecting someone else to turn it off

At the Blackout we saw an average 11% reduction across buildings involved, over Christmas let us try and beat this! We're counting on you to help us achieve our 35% carbon reduction target by July 2016.

Message from Security for the forthcoming closure period:

  • Secure all windows and lock all doors
  • Where possible, move all valuable items away from windows
  • Close blinds
  • Lock away as many valuable items as possible
  • Keep all keys locked away in a safe place
  • If your building has an alarm, ensure it is in good working order and set for the duration
  • Ensure all access control systems are programmed to remain locked throughout the closure period
  • If you come into work over the closure period, please inform Security Control when you arrive and also when you leave.  If you require access to the building. Prior notification must be sent to security@reading.ac.uk No access will be granted without this.
  • Bank all cash
  • Ensure vending machines are emptied. Consider placing notices on vending machines, stating that the machines are emptied on a daily basis
  • Property mark any new items. It won't stop them being stolen, but it will make them less attractive to thieves. For further information, please contact Gary McGuirk, Deputy Head of Security on ext. 6188
  • Remove all equipment from University vehicles before parking them in car park 5. Please leave vehicle keys with Security Control. Ensure they are collected by 08:00am  on the morning of 5th January
  • Update Security Control with any changes to your emergency call-out arrangements
