University staff network, LGBT Plus celebrates LGBT History Month
Monday, 09 February 2015
February is LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) History Month. To celebrate this the University of Reading staff network, LGBT Plus, are hosting a lunchtime seminar: ‘LGBT+ Scientists: where are they and why does it matter?' to be given by Professor David Smith, University of York on Tuesday 10 February.
Professor Smith will discuss the subject of ‘science in the closet', examining whether science professionals can really give 100% of their efforts at work if they don't feel that they can bring 100% of themselves to work.
The seminar is part of a special programme of events, jointly organised with Reading University Students' Union (RUSU) to support the importance of diversity and openness amongst its staff and student community. It will also be given in honour of Lord Wolfenden, University of Reading Vice-Chancellor between 1950 and 1964, whose 1957 enquiry into Homosexuality and Prostitution led to the legalisation of same-sex relationships in the UK.
