Switch off at Easter

Tuesday, 31 March 2015

Earth hour at the Houses of Parliament

On Saturday night, 172 countries participated in Earth Hour, the largest mass symbolic event in the world demonstrating people's concern for the environment.  Landmarks across the world switched off their lights to demonstrate their concern for the environment.

At the University we have the opportunity each year over the extended Easter holiday (Thursday 2 April to Monday 6 April inclusive) to switch off all those electrical items we don't need and really help to reduce our collective environmental impact. We recognise that in some cases, items do need to be left on but we also know that a lot of things are left on unnecessarily. You may not realise but the University spent £40,000 on electricity alone last Easter whilst most of us were away. That's equivalent to 80,000 Cadburys Creme Eggs!

So what are we asking you to do before you leave? Well it's really simple, here is a checklist:

  • Turn off any lights
  • Switch off your computer and monitor
  • Switch off printers, scanners and copiers
  • Close and lock any windows
  • Switch off any water boilers in kitchens

Over Christmas, our London Road campus managed to reduce energy consumption by nearly 10% compared to last year, it would be great if across the University we could do the same this Easter.
