Privy Council approves changes to University Charter and Ordinances

Friday, 12 June 2015

University Shield

At a meeting of the Privy Council held on 10 June at Buckingham Palace, Her Majesty The Queen approved the proposed changes to the University's Charter of Incorporation and the abolition of its Statutes. The new Charter and Ordinances will be effective from 1 August 2015.

The University's Charter, our core constitution, was drawn up when Reading became an independent institution in 1926.  It constitutes the University as a legal entity and grants the power to award degrees.  The charter reform project was set up 18 months ago to ensure that we have governance structures in place that will enable the University to realise its ambitions for 2026 with the University's Council approving the changes to the Charter, Statutes and Ordinances in March 2015.

Colleagues throughout the University have been working with the Legal Services team to develop the new Charter, and with HR to develop new HR policies and contracts. The University is currently consulting with UCU on new academic contracts and will share a draft with colleagues shortly.
