The Department of Meteorology’s Professor Anthony Illingworth and Professor Dame Julia Slingo DBE FRS have each been awarded prestigious fellowships following their contributions to their respective fields. Professor Anthony Illingworth, Emeritus Professor in Meteorology, has been elected Fellow of the American Meteorological Society, and Professor Dame Julia Slingo, Visiting Professor in Meteorology, has received an Honorary Fellowship of the Institute of Physics.
Anthony’s induction into the American Meteorological Society was in recognition of his influential research in atmospheric remote sensing. Anthony joined the University in 1993, and has crafted a highly specialised career focused on radar and satellite observations of clouds and precipitation. His innovative techniques in estimating rainfall have been implemented across the UK operational rain radar network.
Julia taught at the Department of Meteorology for many years after joining in 1990, in which she became the first female professor of meteorology in the UK. She retains her connection to the University as a Visiting Professor and is the Chief Scientist at the Met Office. Her specialities are climate modelling and tropical weather.
As one of six new fellows inducted into the Institute of Physics, Julia now joins the list of 52 eminent individuals including Professor Stephen Hawking and Professor Peter Higgs, with honorary fellowships serving as the highest accolade the IOP can bestow. The award will be conferred on the six 2015 fellows at the IOP Awards Dinner in London on 5 November.
