Come and join our 90th anniversary celebrations on Thursday 17 March
Wednesday, 16 March 2016
Tomorrow we celebrate our 90th anniversary. This is a significant day for the University, as it marks the achievements of our academics, students and staff over the last 90 years.
Whether taking part in our world record attempt or joining us for a slice of cake, this is the time to join together with your colleagues, friends and alumni to celebrate being part of the University family.
Lunchtime celebrations and world record attempt
A special cake reception will be held between 1:00pm and 2:00pm in the Palmer Quad, with entertainment provided by our very own University Big Band.
During our lunchtime celebrations we will be holding at official attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the ‘most simultaneous human cradle lifts’, inspired by the moment news of our Royal Charter reached our first Vice-Chancellor back in 1926.
In the presence of the Guinness World Record team, staff and students will simultaneously perform a 'four-hand seat carry' in groups of three– this is your chance to become part of University history!
To take part, sign up at our 90th anniversary website. You must be available from 12:30 to 2:00pm on the day. It will be possible to sign up on the day, but registering in advance is preferable. Watch the short video here for more.
We’ll be recording details of all who take part in our world record attempt in our University archive, and everyone will be given a memento to take away on the day.
Don’t forget that staff looking to travel from our London Road and Greenlands campuses can travel by shuttle- see our 90th anniversary website for more.
University Court Meeting
Later, a special meeting of the University Court will take place at The Great Hall from 6.00pm, followed by a celebratory reception.
The meeting of Court will provide a fitting opportunity to celebrate our long and successful history. Traditionally, Court meetings are attended by members of the University Council, Senate and invited individuals– with this being a special occasion, places have been offered to staff, students and alumni by ballot. All who have been successful in getting a place have been notified.
