National pay negotiations 2016-17: message from John Brady

Wednesday, 20 April 2016

John Brady

The Joint Negotiating Committee for Higher Education Staff (JNCHES) has begun its work in respect of the 2016-17 pay negotiations.

A first meeting was held on Tuesday 22 March 2016 at which the employers’ side tabled an opening offer of a 1% increase on all points from 1 August 2016. This opening offer is 0.7% ahead of the current official inflation measure. A counter pay claim has been tabled by the five participating national trades unions.

Further meetings of the JNCHES are scheduled as follows:

  • Thursday 28 April 2016
  • Thursday 19 May 2016
<!--[if !supportLists]-->

Last week, the University received notification from the UCU declaring a dispute in respect of the 2016-17 pay round, and its intention to ballot members for industrial action. I have written to the UCU Head Office expressing disappointment at their decision to initiate a dispute at such an early point in the process.

I will provide further information in respect of the pay round discussions and the possibility of industrial action as and when it becomes available.

Please feel free to contact me on j.j.brady@reading.ac.uk if you have any questions.
