Refurbishment of Van Emden Lecture Theatre to begin Thursday 26 May

Van Emden Lecture Theatre

A concept image the Van Emden Lecture Theatre following refurbishment

Staff and students should note that contractors will be preparing for the Van Emden Lecture Theatre refurbishment from Thursday 26 May.

On Thursday 26 and Friday 27 May work will be carried out to prepare the area for the contractor’s compound. This work will involve some hand digging which will be quiet.

Cabins for our contractor will be set up on Saturday 4 June. On Thursday 9 and Friday 10 June hoardings will be set up on site. As part of the refurbishment, scaffolding will be erected over the evening of Thursday 9 June to Tuesday 14 June.

Works to refurbish the lecture theatre will continue over the summer. No construction works will take place during exams or across our summer Open Days on Friday 17 and Saturday 18 June.

The refurbishment seeks to revamp the Van Emden Lecture Theatre, transforming it into a contemporary teaching space with increased capacity and improved facilities.

The project will:

  • Provide a visually modern and striking lecture theatre
  • Increase the seating capacity from 173 to 233
  • Provide writing ledges and improved accessible seating areas
  • Provide new IT and audio-visual facilities
  • Incorporate extensive white boards
  • Improve heating, ventilation and lighting

The refurbishment is anticipated to be completed September 2016.

Please note that reserved parking spaces, disabled parking bays and motorbike spaces between Whiteknights House and the HumSS Building will be moved to Car Park 5.

Be advised that the location of the contractor’s compound means that vehicle access to the building entrance next to Eat at HumSS will not be possible. Pedestrian routes will be unaffected, and Eat at HumSS will remain open as usual.
