Vice-Chancellor Sir David Bell amongst participants of Stonewall Allies programme

Stonewall Allies one day programme

Allies can play a central role in maintaining an inclusive environment for LGBT staff and students.

Vice-Chancellor Sir David Bell will join colleagues from across the University in the Stonewall Allies one day programme on Tuesday 19 July.

The programme will be hosted by Stonewall at London Road in LO22 103, 09:30–17:30. Places are still available for University staff.

Stonewall believe that allies can be an extremely effective mode of support for members of the LGBT community. An ally is an individual who continuously exercises inclusive behaviour and understands the potential they have to influence others in a constructive way.

For a university, allies of all orientations can play a central role in instigating positive change and creating an inclusive environment for LGBT students and staff.

With this in mind, the programme aims to empower allies of the LGBT community to become active agents of change, leading the way for a more inclusive workplace for our LGBT colleagues. The session will raise awareness of the issues faced by LGBT staff, with the aim being for participants to consider how being an ally can help shape their workplace.

As much of the workshop is geared around bringing in culture change, the session would be best suited to those in leadership positions, such as Heads of Schools / Functions and senior management.

That said, all members of staff can be allies if they wish- colleagues from all parts of the University with a strong interest are obviously welcome to take part.

To sign up please email Lesley Lord. If you can’t attend this session but would be interested in future programmes, please let Lesley know.
