Whiteknights campus Green Flag 2016

The lake at Whiteknights campus

Whiteknights campus has been crowned one of the UK’s best outdoor spaces for the sixth consecutive year.

The University was awarded its sixth Green flag yesterday, and with our scenic lake, woodlands and the celebrated Harris Gardens, it’s easy to see why. Our Whiteknights campus continues to score highly each year- we consistently receive some of the highest scores among the 1,686 parks and green spaces receiving a Green Flag award.

Steve Boon, Director of Facilities Maintenance, is thrilled that Whiteknights campus has been awarded its sixth Green Flag

“Recent student satisfaction surveys have highlighted the fact that the ‘attractive campus environment' is a key factor in undergraduates choosing to study at Reading, so it is increasingly important that our team of staff and volunteers deliver this.

“Maintaining more than 123 beautiful hectares so consistently is something to be proud of, and I pay tribute to all of my staff and volunteers for their hard work.”

Speaking of this year’s awards, Paul Todd, International Green Flag award scheme Manager, said:

“We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme, especially as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the awards.

“All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag award.”

The Green Flag awards scheme is run by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy and is now in its 20th year. Any green space that is accessible to the public is eligible to enter for a Green Flag award.
