Personal data in ESS: help us improve our workplace
Thursday, 11 August 2016
Colleagues are encouraged to take a moment to check personal details listed in Employee Self Service (ESS).
Back in June, the University revised the list of classifications relating to sexual orientation in ESS following consultation with our LGBT Plus Network. The revisions also reflect recommendations set by Stonewall in promoting equality in the workplace.
The categories ‘Homosexual’ and ‘Not Specified’ have been removed. The revised classifications are as follows:
- Bisexual
- Gay man
- Gay woman/lesbian
- Heterosexual/straight
- Other
- Prefer not to say
Colleagues that have previously identified their status by using one of these two categories will now need to select a new one from the revised list.
Data on personal attributes such as ethnic background or sexual orientation directly influences our procedures and policies, and helps us to create a positive environment for all colleagues. Information is treated as strictly confidential and cannot be used to identify individuals.
