University Council gets two new academic members
Friday, 05 August 2016
Professor Laurie Butler and Professor Julian Park have been elected to membership of the Council.
The Council is the University’s governing body and meets at least four times each academic year. It agrees our strategic direction, approves major strategic decisions and ensures that we are compliant with statutory requirements and approves constitutional changes.
In an election concluded last month, votes were cast as follows:
- Professor Laurie Butler 41.2%
- Dr Amanda Callaghan 23.5%
- Professor Julian Park 35.3%
Dr Richard Messer, University Secretary and Returning Officer, declared that Professor Butler and Professor Park had been elected to serve the Council until 31 July 2019.
Voting is still on for a non-academic colleague, representing Grades 1-5, to be elected to the Council. It closes on Monday 15 August at 5 pm.
The Council has a majority of lay members, drawn from commercial, community and professional organisations, who provide the Council with a valuable perspective. Among the University members, Professors Butler and Park will provide important academic input, replacing the Deans of Faculty on the Council.
