Dr Helen Bilton nominated for Lifetime Achievement award

Dr Helen Bilton, Associate Professor of Education at the Institute of Education (IoE), has been nominated for a Lifetime Achievement award in the Awards for Outstanding Contribution to Learning Outside the Classroom.

Hosted by the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom, the annual awards recognise individuals and teams of people who go above and beyond to provide young people with inspiring experiences outside the typical classroom environment. Winners are chosen by public vote.   

Helen has made a major contribution to the understanding and use of the early years outdoor teaching and learning environment. Since 1982, she has been tirelessly involved in promoting the education of young children in the outdoor environment, and has written widely on the subject. 

Helen’s passion for children learning through outdoor exploration shines through in everything that she does, be it working with school staff to develop their outdoor environment, training students to understand the benefits of children playing outside or enthusing practitioners at a conference. Her commitment to teaching and learning is shown through her National Teaching Fellowship award received in 2012.

Her impact on children has been enormous: enabling children who might not have otherwise learned to love reading, adopt a ‘can do’ approach, triumph over the weather, care for the natural world, challenge themselves - academically, emotionally and physically, use mathematical concepts, learn to persevere and overcome fears, become independent and confident.
