Van Emden Lecture Theatre refurbishment complete
Friday, 28 October 2016
The refurbishment of the Van Emden Lecture Theatre has been completed, transforming it into a contemporary teaching space with increased capacity and improved facilities.
Works began on transforming the theatre in June and were completed on schedule in September, in time for the beginning of term.
The project has:
- Provided a visually modern and striking lecture theatre
- Increased the seating capacity by 35% from 173 to 233
- Provided writing ledges and improved accessible seating areas
- Provided a new tech desk, audio-visual facilities and provision for lecture capture
- Incorporated extensive white boards
- Improved heating, ventilation and lighting
The programme was careful planned and managed to ensure minimal disruption to the 800 language students and staff who occupied HumSS over the summer.
While works on the theatre have now finished, hoardings will remain in the area while the new HumSS student support centre is created.
Reserved parking spaces, disabled parking bays and motorbike spaces between Whiteknights House and the HumSS Building will remain in Car Park 5 as they have throughout the Van Emden Lecture Theatre refurbishment.
Be advised that the location of the contractor’s compound means that vehicle access to the building entrance next to Eat at HumSS is still not be possible. Pedestrian routes remain unaffected, and Eat at HumSS will remain open as usual.
