SCME to occupy Chancellor's Building from spring term 2017
Friday, 02 December 2016
The School of Construction Management and Engineering (SCME) will be rehoused from the URS Building and the Engineering Building into the Chancellor’s Building this December.
Starting from the spring term onwards, SCME students will be taught in the Chancellor’s Building instead of their usual teaching spaces within the URS and Engineering buildings.
The relocation comes in the wake of two significant redevelopment projects taking place at Reading – the refurbishment of the URS Building and the demolition of the Engineering Building as part of the creation of a brand new Health & Life Sciences facility.
Conveniently located within Whiteknights campus along Chancellor’s Way, the new teaching space is in easy reach of essential campus facilities, including the Library and the Students’ Union.
Moves from the URS and Engineering Buildings have been arranged to take place during the Christmas holidays to avoid disruption to students.
Designed to be a home away from home, the £8.4 million Chancellor’s Building will incorporate all of the specialist features SCME students are used to using – including a BIM lounge, an immersive virtual reality ‘CAVE’ and a dedicated resource centre. It has been designed to provide students and staff with a versatile, contemporary and stimulating space for teaching, learning, research and relaxing.
The University is currently working to finalise timetables for the spring term as early as possible. The Head of School will keep School staff updated with details when available. Student timetables will be available the week before the start of term (week commencing 2 January 2017), and will be updated to include sessions taught within the Chancellor’s Building where applicable.
University staff will also note that rooms previously available to book within the URS Building will be reassigned to the Chancellor’s Building.
The Chancellor’s Building will be the home of SCME until the refurbishment of the URS Building is complete, currently anticipated for 2020. As its own project, the Chancellor’s Building was delivered on schedule and budget; as well as housing SCME for the next few years, the University aims to use it as alternative teaching space over the course of further campus improvement projects.
