German impact on British life and culture explored in pop-up exhibition

Did you know that Germans are the largest group of foreign nationals working here at Reading?

For centuries, Germans have had an immense impact on British life and culture. From Monday 16 January until Friday 24 March, the University will host ‘Germans in Britain’, a special pop-up exhibition exploring the rich and fascinating history of German migrants to Britain.

Find out how British sport, science, banks, businesses, music, monarchs, art and design have all been shaped by their German connections. 

A programme of events around the exhibition has been coordinated by Dr Melani Schroeter, Programme Director of German Studies at Reading. As well as presentations by some of her students, who interviewed some of our German colleagues, there will be a guest lecture by Dr Stefan Manz (Aston University) on German Immigrants and the First World War. 

And to give the exhibition particular local reference, she is coordinating a panel discussion with Pro-Vice-Chancellor Vincenzo Raimo, Hella Eckhardt (Archaeology), Beatrice Heuser (Politics and International Relations), Peter Kruschwitz (Classics), Theo Marinis (Director of CeLM) and Nikos Georgantzis (Agriculture) – who will discuss: ‘The Brelephant in the room: Living in post-referendum UK as an EU citizen’.
