Professor Mark Fellowes to step down as Head of School of Biological Sciences

After seven years, Professor Mark Fellowes, Head of the School of Biological Sciences, will step down from his post at the end of July 2017. 

Under Mark’s leadership, the School has grown its undergraduate population, generated a critical mass in research - not least through a very significant increase in postgraduate students - introduced many new programmes and put its finances on a sound footing. Mark has also played a critical role in the planning for a new Health and Life Sciences Building which will have some of the best facilities in the country in just a few years from now. 

Sir David Bell, Vice-Chancellor, said: “Mark has been an outstanding Head of the School of Biological Sciences. Working in concert with his colleagues, he has brought about substantial change which puts the School in an excellent position for the next phase of its development.

“I have never failed to be impressed by Mark’s relentless focus on the detail of improvement. Yet, at the same time, he has put the interests of the School, and the wider University, at the centre of his thinking.

“While I am very sorry that Mark will be stepping down as Head of School, I am delighted that he will continue to make a hugely valuable contribution to research and teaching.”

Arrangements for filling the post of Head of School will be announced in due course.
