Professor Gail Marshall to head School of Literature and Languages

Professor Gail Marshall has been appointed as Head of School of Literature and Languages with effect from 1 August 2017.

Professor Marshall has recently finished a term as Research Director for the College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities at the University of Leicester, where she was also Director of the Victorian Studies Centre.

She has research interests in Victorian fiction and theatre, Victorian historiography, and women’s lives and writings from the period.

Professor Marshall is currently working on a monograph on the literature and culture of 1859, which is both a micro-history of that year, and of the life of George Eliot in 1859, when her real identity was revealed to the public, and she published her first novel.

Professor Robert Van de Noort, the University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Academic Planning and Resource, said he is looking forward to working with Professor Gail Marshall. “Gail brings strong experience to the School of Literature and Languages, and will lead our efforts to build on its recent league table successes”.

The current Head of School of Literature and Languages, Professor Alison Donnell, is stepping down at the end of March to become the Head of School of Literature, Creative Writing and Drama at the University of East Anglia.

From 1 April to 31 July 2017, Dr Julia Waters, Head of Department for Languages and Modern European Studies will be the acting Head of School.
