Join us for International Women's Day events
Thursday, 02 March 2017
8 March is International Women’s Day, and the University is marking the occasion with some interesting events.
The School of Built Environment is hosting a seminar with Chrissi McCarthy, founder and managing director of Constructing Equality.
Chrissi will speak about the gender balance issues that face STEM professions (with a focus on built environment professions), the benefits of greater gender balance, and the role both men and women can play in strengthening the sector.
The event will be held in Miller G05, 1-2pm. Contact Eugene Mohareb for more information.
Discussion and debate
Later in the day, senior academics from across the University will be giving talks on a range of issues connected with equality.
Dr Madeleine Davies from the Department of English will host the evening – with Professor Clare Furneaux talking about women and language; Dr Orla Kennedy talking about women and weight; Dr Brian Feltham, discussing the internalisation of harassment and discrimination; Professor Rachel McCrindle discussing women in male dominated industries such as Engineering; and, Dr Mary Morrissey analysing the construction of Hillary Clinton in the recent US election campaign.
The talks will be followed by a debate led by members of the audience. This has been lively and fascinating in previous years and staff members have enjoyed talking through the issues with our students.
The discussion and debate will be held in Palmer 102, 6-8 pm. Contact Dr Madeleine Davies for more information.
Under the Shadow
If you prefer a film, then the Department of Film, Theatre and Television is launching a new documentary “Under the Shadow” – a film about how politics, corruption and impunity are affecting the lives of women, men and children in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This will be followed by a panel discussion with documentary filmmaker Fiona Lloyd-Davies, Vava Tampa, Congolese political youth activist and Sarah Blakemore, Director of Keeping Children Safe.
The event starts at 6.15pm in the Minghella Cinema.
Edith Morley Lecture
On 10 March, Penny Mordaunt, the Member of Parliament for Portsmouth North and a University alumna, will be talking to the Vice-Chancellor, Sir David Bell, as part of the Edith Morley Lecture.
Penny has had a successful career is business and communications – working in the private, public and charitable sectors - before joining politics.
During her visit to the campus, Penny will join us for the renaming ceremony of the HumSS building. It is to be named after Edith Morley, who was the UK's first female professorial appointment.
Admission is free, but spaces are limited – please visit the Events listing page to register your attendance.
