Professor James A. Green to be Academic Visitor at Oxford

Monday, 06 March 2017

Professor James A. Green

Professor James A. Green (School of Law) has been awarded the position of Academic Visitor at the University of Oxford from September 2017 to January 2018. James will join Oxford’s Faculty of Law.

While in Oxford, James will be working on a project focused on the right of collective self-defence in international law. Article 51 of the UN Charter sanctifies states’ ‘inherent right of individual or collective self-defence’. While individual self-defence has received significant scholarly attention, collective military action in self-defence has been something of an afterthought in the literature.

This fact has become particularly pertinent given that collective self-defence has been the primary legal justification advanced for the US-led coalition’s military action in Syria since 2014. The project therefore aims to clarify the law in this area.

Please join us in congratulating James on his appointment.
