Wolfenden Lecture series to debut in May

Ruth Hunt, Chief Executive of Stonewall, will deliver the University’s inaugural Wolfenden Lecture on Thursday 4 May 2017.

This special event is the first in a new annual University lecture series given by high profile members of the UK’s LGBT community. 

In 2015, Ruth was voted the third most influential LGBT person in Britain in The Independent’s Rainbow List and continues to be an inspirational figure today.

The lecture series is named in honour of the report written by The Wolfenden Committee, which was chaired by Lord Wolfenden in 1957, the University’s ViceÔÇæChancellor between 1950 and 1964. The Wolfenden report became a key milestone in LGBT history in the UK when it recommended that, ‘… homosexual behaviour between consenting adults in private should no longer be a criminal offence.’

Ruth will be discussing 'LGBT Equality: Past, Present and Future'. The lecture will be held in the Van Emden Lecture Theatre, Edith Morley (formerly the HumSS building), Whiteknights campus. Doors open from 6.30pm.

The lecture also falls on the 60th anniversary of the Wolfenden report – we are delighted to celebrate this extraordinary part of our heritage with this special event to reflect on progress, and inspire future generations of the LGBT+ community and their allies to achieve great things.
