Supporting LGBT at the University of Reading

Over the coming weeks we will be holding several special events and training programmes that focus on the unique challenges and experiences faced by the LGBT community.

Stonewall LGBT Role Models Programme 2017

The Stonewall one-day LGBT Role Models programme is aimed at LGBT staff and provides an opportunity to explore the importance of LGBT role models and how they can hold a positive influence on their communities and workplaces.

It offers:

  • Insight and understanding of what it means to be yourself
  • An understanding of what it means to be an LGBT role model
  • Practical ways to step up as an LGBT role model
  • Active listening skills and techniques for having good quality conversations
  • Increased motivation and confidence to become a visible and influential role model
  • A network of other LGBT peers from across a range of sectors and communities

Central funding is available for up to 8 programme places over the next 12 months, with the request that the School or Service covers the cost of travel to the event for the participants.

The next programme will be held in London on Tuesday 9 May – if you would like to take part, please contact Yasmin Ahmed.

International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia 2017

Each year, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBiT) raises awareness of issues around homophobia, transphobia and biphobia.

We will mark IDOHOBiT with the following events:

Tuesday 9 May, LGBT+ Ally Information session

Members of our LGBT+ Ally network, including Vice-Chancellor Sir David Bell, will provide advice on promoting better inclusion in the workplace. Takes place at Henley Business School, G11 12 – 1 pm, with lunch provided. Email Sinead O'Flynn to book a place.

Friday 12 May, Trans Awareness Training

Exploration of the range and variety of people who identify as transgender. Takes place at the Chancellor's Building G03, 2 – 4 pm. Staff can book via Employee Self Service.

Wednesday 17 May, IDAHOBiT celebrations

A rainbow flag will be mounted onto the flagpole between Whiteknights House and the Library in a ceremony hosted by the Vice-Chancellor, RUSU, and LGBT + Network. The ceremony takes place at 1 – 2 pm and all are welcome to attend.

If you have any general enquiries about any of the events taking place listed above, please contact Yasmin Ahmed.
