Visual arts open session on 30 May

Staff and students are invited to an open session on the future of visual arts at the University.

The session is part of our efforts to enhance the campus experience through arts and to make the most of the talent and opportunity that exists across relevant disciplines.

It will take place on Tuesday 30 May (1-2 pm) at Van Emden Theatre, Edith Morley (formally HumSS).

‘Visual arts’ encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture, design, printmaking, photographs, video, filmmaking, theatre and performance, literature and architecture.

The University wants to be an activist institution in the visual arts and a regional leader in the field.

To coordinate our activities and investment towards attaining this ambition, a Visual Arts Group has been formed. Chaired by Vice-Chancellor Sir David Bell, it has among its members Richard Messer (Chief Strategy Officer), Roberta Gilchrist (Research Dean), Claire Furneaux (Teaching & Learning Dean), John Gibbs (Arts and Communication Design), Lorraine Farrelly (Architecture), Peter Miskell (International Business & Media History), Rachel Stewart (Planning & Strategy Office), Susanne Clausen (Art) and Fiona Blair and Vicky Baldwin (MCE).

The session at Van Emden is aimed at initiating a discussion on how to promote and enhance visual arts across the University.

It will include an introduction by the Vice-Chancellor, followed by short presentations by Roberta Gilchrist, Susanne Clausen, Lorraine Farrelly and Tina O'Connell.

The presentations will be followed by an interaction with the audience – where you can ask questions about the presentations or share your ideas and suggestions on visual arts at the University.

We are keen to involve staff and students in this initiative and would also welcome your suggestions on this.
