Explore the realities of multilingualism in CELM week, 19 - 23 June

In our global society, many of us wish we could speak another language as fluently as our own native tongue. But what are the realities of being multilingual? What kinds of opportunities and challenges does multilingualism bring? 

The Centre for Literacy and Multilingualism (CeLM) is proud to host a week of special events from Monday 19 June to Friday 23 June.  

Events across the week are open to families as well as University staff and professionals working with bilingual families. It will also mark the official launch for CeLM, an interdisciplinary research institute based at the University of Reading.

Art exhibition 'Point of Entry' by Duncan Swann

Exhibition by artist Duncan Swann. A display of work exploring the themes of identity and humanity in the context of migration.

Public Lecture ‘Literacy development in multilingual classrooms: challenges and opportunities’

Through her public lecture, Professor Rhona Stainthorp, Institute of Education, aims to raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities multilingual children face when they learn how to read and write in more than one language. Please register your attendance in advance.

Workshop ‘Bi-/Multilingualism and the Declining Brain: Current evidence and future directions’

Free workshop examining contemporary theory on the neuroprotective effects of bi-/multilingualism against brain decline in healthy and patient populations. Please book a place in advance.

Workshop ‘Language impairment in bilingual children: Research & Clinical Practice in France, the UK, and the USA’

Free workshop addressing the challenge of identifying language impairment in bilingual children, bringing together researchers and practitioners from France, the UK, and the USA who work with bilingual children with language impairment. Please book a place in advance.
