The School of Mathematical, Physical and Computational Sciences has introduced a new award that seeks to highlight teaching and learning excellence within the School.
The School Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning aims to recognise and reward staff for the work they do in creating and promoting excellence in teaching and student support, and to encourage staff to develop and disseminate examples of excellence more widely.
The recipients of the inaugural awards were:
Dr Pete Inness (Meteorology)
For collaborative work with colleagues from Film, Theatre and Television, to incorporate the preparation and delivery of a television forecast, and for approaches to feedback, in the Part 2 module Forecasting: Practice and Presentation.
Dr Calvin Smith (Mathematics and Statistics)
For implementation of an early feedback scheme in the Part 1 module Linear Algebra, for support of colleagues in implementing the scheme in their modules, and for dissemination of the approach through presentations at Reading and more widely.
Dr Rachel Newton (Mathematics and Statistics)
For implementation of approaches for enlivening the subject and motivating definitions in ways that have captured student interest and enhanced understanding in the Part 1 module Foundations of Mathematics.
Dr Pat Parslow (Computer Science)
For a research-led approach to teaching and assessment, development of transferable skills and a commitment to diversity and inclusion in group work in the Part 3 module Social, Legal and Ethical Aspects of Science and Engineering.
Professor Ben Cosh, Head of School, said:
“We received a fantastic set of nominations from across the School, and the panel members who assessed them were incredibly impressed by the range and quality of work that the nominations demonstrated. It's clear that we have many excellent things going on in our School, and over the summer we will be looking at ways we can disseminate the many examples of teaching and learning excellence that we have.”
