Paul and Elizabeth Glaister appointed into prestigious mathematics bodies

We are delighted to announce that Paul and Elizabeth Glaister, Department of Mathematics & Statistics, have recently been appointed into two prestigious mathematics bodies.    

Professor Paul Glaister has been elected into the Council of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA). The IMA aims to support the advancement of mathematical knowledge and its applications, as well as promoting and enhancing mathematical culture in the UK and beyond. It is a professional and learned society for qualified and practising mathematicians, and comprises of around 5,000 members across various sectors.  

Paul’s appointment follows induction into the Royal Society’s Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME) in 2017, and election to the Chair of The Joint Mathematical Council of the UK (JMC) in 2015. Paul was recently interviewed about his career and lifelong interest in mathematics for Cambridge Mathematics, a University of Cambridge collaborative enterprise ‘in pursuit of education, learning, and research at the highest international levels of excellence’.

In parallel, Elizabeth Glaister has been appointed to the Council of the Mathematical Association.

The Mathematical Association is the oldest established subject association in the UK, having been founded in 1871 as the ‘Association for the Improvement of Geometrical Teaching’. It aims to support and promote confidence and enjoyment in mathematics for all, with a particular emphasis on engaging young people with the subject. 

Elizabeth is especially experienced in helping young people pursue interests in mathematics – in addition to lecturing on our International Foundation Programme, she also teaches mathematics at Kendrick School, a highly selective girls’ school in Reading.

On the couple’s achievements, Paul said: 

“Having been members of the University for nearly 40 years, as well as meeting here, we have much to thank the University for. We are proud to carry the flag for the University in our various external engagements across the UK mathematics education sector.”
