Personal tutoring is key to enhancing the student experience, and is a Teaching and Learning priority. In 2016, the Teaching and Learning Strategy Board established a strategic project to review the Personal Tutor System.
Last academic session (2016-17) the Personal Tutor System Steering Group, chaired by Professor Orla Kennedy, undertook a series of staff and student surveys, focus groups and interviews to identify examples of best practice and gather feedback from staff and students on how their experience of the Personal Tutor System could be improved.
In collaboration with Senior and Personal Tutors, the Steering Group have developed a collection of helpful online materials to support tutors as they work with students.
New materials for 2017-18 include:
- A key contacts overview to support Personal Tutors when signposting students to key services.
- A suggested outline and possible agenda (Word, 331 KB) for UG Personal Tutor meetings each term (PGT to be considered in 2017/18).
- A list of short activities to help Personal Tutors explore the meaning of the University of Reading Student Charter with your tutees.
- An overview of relevant CQSD (T&L) training sessions for Senior and Personal Tutors currently planned for 2017/18.
- A guide to STaR Mentors for Personal Tutors.
These can also be accessed through the Personal Tutor's Handbook.
The Steering Group are considering longer-term options for the Personal Tutoring System at Reading, and look forward to working with staff and students across the University throughout the process.
