Travel news: cycle to work day, new travel website and more
Monday, 11 September 2017
There’s plenty to feel good about if you cycle to work this month – from free breakfasts to local victories, take a look at the latest cycling news:
Reading Cycle Challenge victory
In June the University took part in the BikeSmart Reading Cycle Challenge – we are delighted to announce that we won first prize in two team categories!
These were:
- 1st Place 500+ Staff (University of Reading)
- 1st Place 7-19 Staff (Sustainability Services)
Over 100 colleagues across the University took part in the challenge, clocking up a total of 6,702 miles and beating 80 other local workplaces with the highest level of participation.
A huge thank you to everyone who took part. Our prize of £500 will be spent on additional DIY bicycle maintenance equipment, which will be available to use at stations in the Chaplaincy and Security Services – so next time you need to pump up a tyre, please come and stop by!
Cycle to work day, Wednesday 13 September
Wednesday 13 September is national Cycle to Work day. To encourage staff to cycle to work we will be putting on a free Bike Breakfast – come along to Whiteknights House by the Security Service window (near Edith Morley) between 8.30 am and 10.00 am to claim a voucher for a free breakfast at the Edith Morley café.
Update: staff at our London Road campus can also take part in the free Bike Breakfast - please collect your voucher from Bethan Miskell in the exams office, G02 L28 (next to the gym), and use them in the Dairy.
Those thinking about starting cycling are more than welcome too, as we’ll also have Cycle Republic demonstrating new bikes, maintenance advice from Dr Bike, free security labels, special offers and more – a chat with them might also reward you with a food voucher...
At 5.00 pm in the Palmer Building foyer, the Reading Bike Kitchen will hold the first of a series of monthly pop-up information sessions on bike maintenance. So if you can’t stop by first thing in the morning, come along and speak to one of their friendly volunteers for advice on keeping your bike in check.
On Your Bike day, Wednesday 27 September
Our popular On Your Bike event will return on Wednesday 27 September, including a second-hand bike sale between 12.00 pm and 4.00 pm – we’ll be in a smaller tent adjacent to the Reading Experience event dome, so please come and take a look.
New Sustainable Travel webpages
You may well have already noticed that our Sustainability Services pages have been recently revamped. The website now makes it easier to find information on key sustainability themes, including policies, energy, recycling and travel.
The Sustainable Travel page contains useful information for staff and students on getting around Reading (cycling, buses, car hire etc.), links to local transport providers and special offers for students and staff.
It also includes information on our recently reviewed Travel Plan, which sets out the University’s plans for increasing sustainable travel and targets to 2022.
