Julie DashÔÇÖs Daughters of the Dust

A series of events will be held this month to mark Black History Month. All students and staff are welcome – please come and join us:

• 17 October –  Film: “Daughters of the Dust” with an introduction by Professor Emily West (7.15 pm, Reading Film Theatre)
• 25 October – Discussion: In conversation: Alice Mpofu Coles (Chigumira), former Chairwoman of the Reading Refugee Support Group (7.30 pm, Minghella Studios)
• 26 October – Lecture: Understanding and Disrupting the Persistence of Racial Inequality in Higher Education by Dr Jason Arday, Roehampton University (1-2 pm, Meadows Suite)

Later this month we will also undertake a staff and student survey on how race and ethnicity may influence experience, opportunity and success within our organisation. This is an opportunity for staff and students to contribute to our future action plans to improve support for everyone at Reading. We will share details of this soon.

Black History Month was established in the USA by Dr Carter G Woodson, a black American historian who created a month for African American people to have the opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge themselves and their achievements. In England, Black History Month has been celebrated in October since 1987. Originally part of a drive in African Jubilee year to improve racial harmony in London, it has now grown to include the whole country and the contributions and heritage of other black communities.
