Outstanding volunteers recognised in 2017 Distinguished Volunteer Awards

Congratulations of the winners of the inaugural Distinguished Volunteer Awards.

Earlier this year, the Campaigns and Supporter Engagement Office launched the Distinguished Volunteer Awards in recognition of the incredible work our volunteers do in support of the University and its community.  

The team received many nominations for staff, students and alumni – a clear demonstration of the value placed on those who take the time to give something back to the community. 

A big thank you to all who submitted nominations – while there could only be six winners, the scope of nominations was a real testament to the outstanding contributions our volunteers make. 

Winners of the 2017 Distinguished Volunteer Awards 

We are delighted to announce the six winners and a special commendation:

Paul Curtis for his work to reconnect alumni with the Reading University Boat Club, culminating in an alumni team competing at the prestigious Head of the River race. 

Dorothy Dix as an exemplar of volunteering and for her time in mentoring and offering work experience placements for students at Creating Better Futures, a charity she founded which helps impoverished children in Zimbabwe.

Alan Froggatt for his service as a Chair, mentor to students and promoter of Reading Real Estate Foundation’s Pathways to Property initiative. 

David Foo Hoi for his commitment in restructuring the Henley Alumni Association in Singapore, creating an expanded network for all Henley alumni. 

Bobby Yee for his long service to the Henley Alumni Association in Singapore, where he has overseen the administration of the group’s activities. 

Jin Zhu, known as Eugene, for his dedication to regional alumni groups in China and for his support of student recruitment activities and other high-profile events. 

The Universal Voices choir team also received a special commendation for their work with local primary school children, and for upholding the spirit of volunteering. The choir was established and is run by volunteers, including staff members Rebecca Berkley, Katie Whaley and Emily Freeman, and students Lauren Rose, Charlotte Lynch, Tom White and Ben Whatley. 

Paul Curtis, Dorothy Dix, Alan Froggatt and the Universal Voices choir team were presented with their Awards at the University’s annual Supporter Day on 9 September. This event thanks donors, volunteers and friends of the University for their contributions to our work, showcasing the positive impact of their support. Our international winners will receive their awards and certificates shortly.
