Professor Geoffrey Meen becomes Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences

Professor Geoffrey Meen OBE, Professor of Applied Economics, has been conferred as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Prior to his work in academia, Geoffrey worked as a government economist and is now a leading specialist in the economic and policy analysis of housing markets from local to national levels.

Geoffrey’s work includes research on long-run changes in housing conditions since the 19th century that sheds light on modern problems including affordability and provision. In recognition of his work, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2007 and awarded an OBE in the 2007 News Year Honours List for Services to Social Housing.

Geoffrey was one of 69 leading social scientists conferred as Fellows earlier this month. The Academy of Social Sciences is the national academy of academics, learned societies and practitioners in the social sciences, with a mission to promote social sciences for the public benefit. Fellowships are awarded to distinguished scholars and practitioners from academia and the private and public sectors. 

On his conferment, Geoffrey said: “I am delighted to have been awarded a Fellowship by the Academy which, I think, recognises research by a Reading team on housing issues over many years. I would particularly like to thank my co-investigators for providing such a congenial working environment. Housing has not always been top of the policy agenda, but I am pleased to see the greater attention now being paid in policy circles to Britain’s severe housing problem.”

Announcing the conferment, Professor Roger Goodman FAcSS, Chair of the Academy of Social Sciences, said: “Each new distinguished Fellow has been recognised for their outstanding and impactful contributions in their respective fields, and will prove invaluable additions to the range of expertise within the Academy.”
