University seeking a new Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation
Monday, 13 November 2017
We are seeking applications from colleagues across the University who are keen to develop their careers further by becoming Pro-Vice-Chancellor (PVC) for Research and Innovation, and a member of the University Executive Board (UEB). Professor Steve Mithen, the current post-holder completes his second term as a Pro-Vice-Chancellor on 31 July 2018 and the new post-holder will start on 1 August 2018.
The Vice-Chancellor, Sir David Bell commented, “During Steve Mithen’s time as PVC Research and Innovation and, prior to that, PVC International, we have made significant progress as a university. Steve’s work on the international front laid the foundation for the substantial growth in international student numbers that we have seen in recent years. He also helped to raise Reading’s profile in many new markets.
“As PVC Research and Innovation, Steve built on a positive outcome in REF 2014 and developed the 2020 Research Plan. Through it, we have established the infrastructure, leadership and support necessary to enhance our research standing.
“Steve has shown incredible drive and commitment in both his portfolios, making an outstanding contribution during his time as a PVC. He will leave his current role with my grateful thanks.”
The next Pro-Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation will have an opportunity to shape our 2021 REF submission. They will lead the early thinking on our next research strategy and oversee its implementation in due course. On the innovation side, there will be opportunities to develop further greater business and university research collaborations in a variety of ways.
The PVC will become a member of the University Executive Board – sharing collective responsibility for leading and managing the University in an increasingly competitive and turbulent environment.
Open to internal candidates only, this role represents an opportunity to step into a Board-level role. Colleagues interested in finding out more are encouraged to read the VC’s open letter to candidates, job description and further particulars.
We are committed to having a diverse and inclusive workforce and we welcome applications where a flexible working pattern and/or a job share is proposed. Job-share applications need not indicate who the other half might be although coordinated applications from two separate members of staff are welcomed. In this instance, however, each candidate will be assessed on their own merit in terms of their suitability in fulfilling the requirements of the role.
The application will require the submission of a statement of suitability and interest (1000 words max) and the attachment of an up to date CV by Friday 8 December 2017.
