Innovative work celebrated at Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme Showcase

Congratulations to this yearÔÇÖs programme winners!
On Wednesday 8 November, students from across the University took part in the annual Undergraduate Research Showcase. This event celebrates the work of those students who have participated in the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP) and provides them with an opportunity to present their research to a wider audience.
Students taking part in the programme spent the summer collaborating with academic staff on research projects. Each student was asked to design a conference poster showcasing the work they completed over the summer. As part of the showcase, students presented their work to a pair of judges – one previous UROP student and an academic – and were assessed on their clarity of communication.
A total of 89 posters were on display this year, with projects divided across the five key research themes of the University.
The winners for each category were:
Environment: Marc Mohajer
Healthy city: exploring the relationship between urban design and air pollution in London
Food: Judson Lee
Screening for novel variation in field bean seed quality
Health: Charlotte Manning
Coronary Heart Disease: the role of LDL
Heritage and Creativity: Bethany Snyder
Climate Change Diplomacy: a Study of President Barack Obama’s rhetoric
Prosperity and Resilience: Iona Jacob
The voice and representation: transgender speakers
The work of these students will also be showcased at the British Conference of Undergraduate Research, which will take place in April 2018 at the University of Sheffield. The conference aims to promote innovative undergraduate research in all disciplines and takes place every spring at a different British university each year.
From these five theme winners, Judson Lee and Marc Mohajer were selected as the overall winners and have been invited to present their work in Westminster. The ‘Posters in Parliament’ event takes place in the Houses of Parliament and exhibits the very best undergraduate research from across the United Kingdom.
We would like to congratulate all students who presented at 2017 UROP showcase – the standard of research was exceptionally high and the amount of hard-work, time and effort put in to each project was truly exceptional. Our congratulations also go to Dr Mara Oliva, from the Department of History, who won the very first UROP Supervisor of the Year Award.
