New study spaces in Halls of Residence
Tuesday, 28 November 2017
We are pleased to announce that we will be creating over 100 new study spaces across our Halls of Residence which should be ready for use in the New Year.
We understand study space is a priority for our students and have been working to identify opportunities to create additional spaces where possible. This new project will see the University working with UPP to refurbish a number of currently underutilised spaces in our Halls, and to install new furniture to create a productive study environment for students.
The locations of these new study spaces are as follows:
- Wessex Library
- St Georges Computer Room
- Wantage Computer Room
- Stenton JCR
- Childs JCR
- Mackinder JCR
As these spaces are located in Halls, their use will be specifically for student residents and their guests. We believe the spaces will provide a convenient study option for students living in Halls, whilst also freeing up space elsewhere across our campuses.
Work is scheduled to start in January 2018, with the aim that the spaces will be open by the end of February. As with all building work scheduled around Halls, any noisy works will be limited to take place between 9am and 5pm.
Study spaces@ URS
As announced earlier this month, students can make use of additional study space in the URS building over the weekends.
Rooms 2s14, 2s21, 2s25, 2s26 and 2s27 will be open for use from 18:00 on Fridays until 08:00 on Mondays, during term time.
These rooms had to be closed when the Large Lecture Theatre in URS was reopened in September. They will still be inaccessible on the weekdays during term time but will be open for use over the weekends and also during vacations and summer terms when the lecture theatre is closed.
The Library also has arrangements in place to open up space in the Chancellor’s Building on Saturdays and Sundays between 10:00 and 18:00 if the Library@URS reaches capacity. Users are requested to talk to Library staff at the URS Ground Floor Information Desk if they are having difficulty in finding a space.
Study space across our campuses
We have provided some helpful resources to make it easier for students to find a suitable space to study. These can be easily accessed through our Library refurbishment project page, and include:
- the Free Room Finder, showing rooms available for immediate use;
- the list of alternative space, highlighting spaces across Whiteknights and London Road campuses, updated for each term;
- the live list of available PCs, giving information in real time on PCs across campus;
- RUSU’s The Study and The Study@TOB2, offering study spaces to all campus card holders and
- rooms which can also be booked through the University’s Central Room Booking service.
Library staff in the URS Building at the Information Desk or Reception will be happy to try and help or advise students looking for study space.
