Much of the content has been drawn directly from current and historic modules taught within the University of Reading’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics – authors Nikos Katzourakis and Eugen Varvaruca turned to their teaching notes for inspiration, including lecture notes from the Topology and Linear Analysis, Measure Theory and Integration, and Functional Analysis modules.
The book is suitable for both classroom use and independent reading, and is an ideal preparation for further study in research areas where a broad mathematical toolbox is required. It features 197 exercises (with solutions) and extensive motivational commentary.

About the authors
Nikos Katzourakis is based at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Reading. His field of expertise lies in the analysis of nonlinear Partial Differential Equations and Calculus of Variations. He is associated with research into vectorial variational problems for supremal functionals, and generalised solutions for fully nonlinear systems.
Eugen Varvaruca is based at the University "Al. I. Cuza’’ of Iasi in Romania, having previously taught at the University of Reading. His research work is concerned with the analysis of nonlinear Partial Differential Equations, focusing particularly on free-boundary problems in fluid dynamics. In 2012 he was awarded the Whitehead Prize by the London Mathematical Society for his contributions.
