School of Arts and Communication Design takes over Tate Exchange
Friday, 19 January 2018
Students and staff from the School of Arts and Communication Design (ACD) will take over Tate Exchange at Tate Modern this month to deliver a week of free workshops and activities.
As part of Tate Modern’s Tate Exchange programme, ACD will stage Reading Assembly on the 5th floor of the Blavatnik Building from Tuesday 23 January until Sunday 28 January.
Tate Exchange is an ambitious ‘open experiment’ which allows other organisations and members of the public to participate in Tate’s creative process, running events and projects on site and using art as a way of addressing wider issues in the world around us. Over the course of a week, members of the public will be invited to join students and staff from AcD and local and international partner organisations, in a series of free activities engaging with art, design, film and performance, including:
- Collaborative clay workshops with ArtLab
- Creating and curating a sensory museum with PurpleSTARS
- Imagining London in 2050 through utopian and dystopian visions of a future city
- Letterpress, design, green screen, and video workshops
- Debates, performances and interactive activities on the politics of representation and identity and of artistic production.
Tina O’Connell, Associate Professor in Art and project lead for ArtLab, which leads Widening Participation activity for ACD, said:
“We are delighted that the University of Reading and partners have been invited to participate in Reading Assembly at Tate Exchange. This year’s ‘Production’ theme enabled us to collaborate with our students, local schools and key partners at one of the world’s leading cultural institutions – a real testament to the incredible progress we have made with Artlab, that links research, practice and education. Artlab lends itself to public engagement, but in working with Tate, we hope that this will have real impact on those we work together with and take us to a new level of activity.”
Reading Assembly brings together expertise from all three departments within ACD – Typography & Graphic Communication, Film, Theatre & Television and Reading School of Art. Many of our students will be central to delivering the activities taking place, highlighting Reading’s strength in the creative arts and providing our students with hands-on experience in collaborating with partners and engaging with the public.
So if you happen to be in London between Tuesday 23 January and Sunday 28 January, please come along and show your support! Full details are available at the Reading Assembly event programme.
