Celebrating Forgotten Women: remembering those who fought for equality
Tuesday, 06 February 2018
Inspired by Vote 100, the departments of History and English Literature invite all staff and students to a special evening celebrating the forgotten voices who pushed for women to be given the vote.
On Thursday 8 February, please join us in the Van Emden Lecture Theatre (Edith Morley) between 6.00-9.00 pm for an evening remembering the forgotten women who fought for equality 100 years ago.
Over the course of the evening, History and English Literature staff and students will deliver short talks on the inspirational women behind the 1918 Representation of the People Act, which gave some women, and all men, the right to vote in political elections for the first time.
To set the scene, there will be an exhibition curated by Special Collections, a themed badge-making operation, and free WSPU (Women's Social and Political Union) coloured lanyards for all attendees. Souvenir postcards will also be available to take home – there will even be a party during the interval!
The evening promises to be packed with fascinating ideas – we hope it proves to be as inspiring as the extraordinary women we are celebrating.
This special event is the brainchild of English Literature student Imogen Snell, who asked Dr Jacqui Turner and Dr Madeleine Davies to help her organise an event to coincide with the Vote 100 centenary.
As well as being assisted by departmental staff, Imogen been supported by fellow History and Literature students in getting the event off the ground. Together, they have organised an impressive evening celebrating extraordinary women.
All staff and students are welcome – more details are available at our Facebook event page.
For queries, please contact Jacqui Turner or Madeleine Davies.
