Vice-Chancellor's address to Senate

Thursday, 22 March 2018

A changing landscape for higher education was the focus of the Vice-Chancellor’s update to the Senate this month.

He said a review of the tertiary education funding, announced earlier this year, would need a strong engagement from the universities – as a reduced income could adversely affect the student experience.

The Office for Students (OfS) takes over the regulation of higher education in England in April 2018, the same month that UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) assumes responsibility for the UK’s £6 billion research funding. With the OfS, the University’s immediate priority will be to gain first-stage recognition to sit on the Register of Approved Providers.

The Vice-Chancellor said it was not clear yet if the issues of interest to the universities will be a central part of Brexit negotiations, but Universities UK and other groups were continuing to lobby for their interest to be represented.
