UCU members vote in favour of USS proposal

Friday, 13 April 2018

USS action: update

UCU members have voted to accept a revised proposal set out by UCU and Universities UK representatives, and the UCU has confirmed that all further strike action is suspended.

The proposal went to an e-ballot of all UCU members, which closed at 2pm today (Friday 13 April). Employers, through UUK, have already indicated support for the proposal.

The proposal will see the establishment of a jointly established panel of experts to review the basis of the scheme valuation, including underlying assumptions. It was agreed in national negotiations that there will be a pause in discussions over USS benefit reform while the review is undertaken.

There are now a number of practical questions over the composition and work of the panel that need to be agreed by UCU and Universities UK before the terms of reference for the panel can be published. Support for this process will need to be sought from the USS Trustee, recognising its statutory responsibilities.
