High standards for environmental and energy management maintained
Tuesday, 24 April 2018
The University once again impressed the environmental auditors to maintain its certification to the internationally recognised Environmental Management Standard ISO14001 and Energy Management Standard ISO50001.
In March, external auditors from NQA assessed the University’s energy management – in their assessment, NQA stated that “the University has developed an excellent system in accordance with requirements of ISO50001:2011 and they should be congratulated for this effort”.
The Environmental Management System also received praise:
“This was an extremely good audit which has demonstrated that the University are operating a well-managed and effective environmental management system. It is clear that the University has adopted a holistic approach to environmental sustainability as evidenced by the Capital Projects processes and also the smaller initiatives such as the Sustain It bottles”.
These ISO standards aim to manage the University’s impacts on the environment by implementing a framework that imbeds environmentally sustainable management practices into normal businesses processes. This includes improving the awareness of sustainability issues, communicating best practice, correcting and improving systems, compliance reporting and monitoring and measuring.
Recognition and thanks go to those who have contributed to the continual improvement of the University’s environmental performance; from litter picking to amending business policies, from recycling to reporting issues and switching off lights. It is the continued effort of staff and students that are thinking and acting sustainably that helps the University maintain and enhance its environmental performance.
