University initiates formal review of modern languages
Wednesday, 02 May 2018
The University has initiated a formal review of modern languages across the Department of Modern Languages and European Studies (MLES) and the Institution-Wide Language Programme (IWLP), which is part of the International Study and Language Institute (ISLI). The review aims to develop integrated and cost-effective delivery for all modern language provision.
Led by the University's Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Robert Van de Noort, the review is expected to report to the University Executive Board in the autumn term in 2018, with any changes in place by 1 August 2019.
Robert said, "Modern languages are critical to the University's goal of being a thriving, broad-based institution and the number of students taught has doubled over the last six years. So it is critical that we identify a sustainable future for all modern language provision at Reading, which includes addressing financial challenges."
Members of the Review Group are:
- Professor Robert Van de Noort (Chair)
- Professor Gail Marshall, Head of School of Literature and Languages
- Dr David Carter, Head of ISLI
- Dr Katja Strohfeldt, Teaching and Learning Dean
- Professor Roberta Gilchrist, Research Dean
- the relevant HR partner
- the relevant Finance Business Partners
- a secretary appointed by the University Secretary, Richard Messer.
The group will invite colleagues from the relevant departments to contribute their thoughts and insights to help inform the plan that is presented to the UEB.
