Mental Health Awareness Week - support that the University offers
Monday, 14 May 2018
It is the Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK.
The week is aimed at raising awareness of mental health and well-being issues, but the focus this year is on stress in the workplace.
According to mental health charity Mind, at least one in six workers experience common mental health problems – including anxiety and depression.
The University is committed to the health and well-being of all its employees. We want to create a workplace that embraces flexibility and gives colleagues the best opportunities to manage their time and commitments and to ensure they are healthy and happy at work.
Reducing the levels of stress at work so far as is reasonably practicable is also a priority. Our HR colleagues facilitate this through appropriate job design, creating a supportive work environment, training and supporting managers and employees to assist them in preventing and coping with workplace stress, and supporting employees if they are experiencing stress.
The following documents provide a framework for preventing and effectively managing stress:
- Stress policy (PDF - 239KB)
- Guidance for managers (PDF - 330KB)
- Guidance for employees (PDF - 290KB)
The University website also has Top 10 tips on avoiding stress at workplace.
Employee Assistance Programme
The University offers an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) called Confidential Care.
Confidential Care can be accessed any time of day or night, 365 days a year. Support is available for whatever issues you might be facing, including work stress, depression, marriage and relationship issues, legal concerns, coping with change, parenting issues, financial problems, health issues and much more.
It also offers a comprehensive wellbeing resource "well online", which offers information and advice to help you optimise your health and wellbeing.
For information on how to access this service, please visit the Employee Assistance Programme.
The Chaplaincy at the University also offers a range of events throughout the term. These include mindfulness workshops, walks and bread-making sessions.
